There's more to life than Football. There is?

It's not all about football, apparently. On some days, the beautiful game and its beautiful teams have actually had to be relegated to the second division, (getting in with the jargon), to make way for the wide range of sports and 'other sports' that made it onto the pre-Celebration timetable.
Thanks to the availability of the new pitch, both Netball and Athletics can now take a higher profile. Needless to say, they are equally energetic, loud and fiercely competitive - all organised by Teacher Moses, who has hit the ground running (more puns intended), since his arrival last term. The entire school & staff are expected to watch each and every event, so it has been time-consuming, to say the least. However, the fun, the energy, benefit to morale & school 'marketing' is priceless.
Other 'sports' include the famous/infamous WTA eating competition. This involves the following:
- Pick a student (who's just had lunch) with a good appetite & excellent swallowing capacity
- Give them a plate loaded with 3 chapatti, 2 bread rolls, a fizzy drink, 2 hard-boiled eggs & a banana
- See who finishes guzzling it down first
- Add in one hysterical, hungry crowd of students, baying & howling for their team member to win
- Give the most vocal teacher a megaphone; allow said teacher to completely wind up the crowd
- Light the touchpaper and stand back......

This entire event is peoplewatching of terrifying but golden proportions. The winner, (King Kenneth in S3), not only ate his entire plate in 2 minutes' flat, raising his hand in victory, but then started to eat off the competitors' plates to prove his rightful win. Roald Dahl's Bruce Bogtrotter character was clearly a total amateur in comparison.

Other 'side' events resemble a heady mix of primary school Sports Days & New Year's Eve party games. They include the relatively tame 'Sack-Racing' and 'The Bottle-Filling Challenge', where competitors start with a bucket of water & cups. They run down the court with mouthfuls of water to fill bottles at the other end. The winner fills the bottle first. Both boys' and girls' teams are equally fast and brilliant. And once again, the spectators almost outshone the competition. Comedy gold.

Netball is certainly a serious contender for contact Rugby, so future SD teams beware. It's a fierce game, not for the timid. A last word goes to WTA Athletics, which may well produce future Commonwealth and Olympics champions for the Uganda National Team, if last week's events are anything to go by.
Go Team WTA!
PS to the Sports Department:
- Stop the spectators racing round the track with the runners; it's impossible to see the participants
- Insist on camera evidence for the finish line, to prevent 'who finished first' disputes!
