Penguins on the Equator?

Once upon a time in 2009, on the old site, there was a golden moment, when the team of visitors put on a 'movie night'. Using a simple DVD player/projector*, the film chosen as the WTA première, (for some reason), was 'Happy Feet'. Two hundred students aged 14 to 21 laughed, screamed, clapped & cheered all the way through - it was an absolute joy to watch the students watching the film.

Fourteen years later, many more students have access at home to a wide range of films, TV, smart phones and online watching, so there would be a very different reaction in attempting to show these young adults a kids' cartoon for a Saturday night treat!

These days, WTA has internet, (mostly), many computers and a broad range of entertainment and educational films, not to mention the use of media during some lessons. Last week, the school took the momentous decision to purchase a DSTV satellite package consisting of documentary, sport, news and information. It will take considerable management and wisdom to use it well, especially if there is a key Premiership match on 'a school night' or during exams. However, it is also a sign that the school is moving forwards in a way that was unthinkable a few years' ago. 

In some ways, students may seem more sophisticated and perhaps less 'innocent' than before, but they all need a bigger world view plus the knowledge to work and exist in life beyond their village and school. Knowledge and information will be key.
