Another Ten Year Celebration!
Elspeth Dugdale | May 8, 2024

2024 marks another significant 10 year milestone in the ServeDirect calendar. It is now 10 years, since 'Team Mirembe House' (a.k.a. Eva and Muhamadh) started working with us, when the house officially opened in 2014, with Sue and Stan Rothwell at the helm.
Any of you who has visited and/or been part of a team trip will have experienced the great hospitality, care, broad smiles and greetings from both Eva and Muhamadh. Taking full responsibility for the house and compound was 'a first' for both of them, as before Mirembe House, they had very different types of labouring work. However, both came with the strongest recommendations from Charles, which was enough.
They have adapted to working with many different nationalities, different accents, different programmes, different dietary needs, very weird food requests, sudden changes of plans, late arrivals and early departures. Honestly, it is hard to put into words how much we rely on them to be there and to 'hold the fort' when we are not there. Special thanks to them from 'Team Stan & Sue', 'Team Johannes & Gé and Team SD, of course.

Eva's soups, shepherd's pies, banana breads & curries (both mild & fiery) have become famous. Everyone loves and admires Muhamadh's broad smile, his singing & great strength & energy. From digging scarily deep latrines to managing the football pitch, from cooking the vast pans of school rice to growing tons of coffee, Muhamadh is a superb multitasker with immense expertise. He is also THE Dog Whisperer of WTA and takes care of the ever increasing number of ServeDirect dogs. Should it be renamed from servedirect.org to servedirect.dog?!

Also, in this 10 years' celebration, we include and thank Baptiste who, in his role as WTA Estate Manager, is a strong and reliable presence on site at all times, providing backup for Mirembe House and keeping a wise eye on the whole site, students and staff. He is definitely is the 'go-to' for lost keys, for switching on the generator, and to warn errant students. He's also the designated driver of the Rock boda-ambulance and a very kind and highly skilled member of the team.

As a result of their hard work and dedication, Baptiste, Eva and Muhamadh are now all in a position to build and own their own houses and land, which is fantastic.
During this time, they have all worked tirelessly with so many people, with great patience and good humour. In taking such good care of us all, they are very much part of the ServeDirect sucess story and enabling the building and school development to move forward. Thankyou Eva, Baptist and Muhamadh - we are all very grateful!
